United Pole Artists received breaking news from American Pole Fitness Association. “The Indian Mallakhamb team (aka Indian Pole Gymnastics) will be making their first trip to New York from India to perform on Friday, October 14, 2011 at the 2nd annual American Pole Fitness Championships. Mallakhamb, something of a buzzword in fitness circles recently, is a combination of traditional Indian gymnastics and martial arts and it can be traced back to the 12th century – today this is a sport in which a gymnast performs feats and attains postures using a rope or a wooden pole. A video of the ancient art of Mallakhamb has recently caught the fancy of fitness buffs the world over, as evidenced by the chart busting popularity of a Youtube video. In a scant few months since its launch in August, the video has had a staggering 4.5 million views, indicating the way that the whole genre of using a pole creatively for fitness, is catching on the world over! The word Mallakhamb derives from two words – Malla meaning strong man or wrestler and khamb meaning pole or pillar. Though one may not want to engage in this for any competitive reasons, the many benefits that can accrue from its practice, such as improvement of strength, flexibility, agility, coordination and neuromuscular development, make it an end in itself. The first references to Mallakhamb dates back to the 12th century classic Manasollasa (1135 AD) by Somesvara Chalukya. For tickets to see the performance and championships please visit the TICKET PAGE. There will be workshops available after their guest performance, October 15th and 16th to learn the art of Mallakhamb. Please stay tuned for their class schedules to be announced at a later date in July. Applications to compete in the traditional pole fitness still available through the CHAMPIONSHIPS page till June 30, 2011. Finalist in the Masters division will compete at the Manhattan Center theater October 14, 2011 in New York City. The event is also open to business sponsorship opportunities and advertisement in the event program book.
