In honor of the current UPA video challenge plus #werkitwednesday I thought I’d write a post about something near and dear to me: FLOORWORK. Floorwork is such a great way to add to your dance story — to express what you’re feeling at a given moment. And it can take on SO MANY different styles! Let’s talk about just a few:
The Many Faces of Floorwork
Acro: think rolls, flips, gymnastics, martial arts . . . this is an incredible style of floorwork and to me always looks so free and fun. A few of my favs: Nadia Sharif killing it as usual Look at this and tell me it doesn’t seem like it would be a BLAST to move like this every now and then. A little something from Heidi Coker Heidi Coker — a different style of movement . . . still within a very acrobatic framework. Lyrical/Contemporary: To me, lyrical floorwork always looks soft and gentle, even when it’s explosive and HUGE. If that sounds like a contradiction . . . maybe it is. I can’t quite put it into words. But here are a couple of examples of what I mean: Sergia Louise Anderson. Wow. Just . . . wow. Whether she’s doing pole-assisted floorwork or leaping and bending, Sergia always makes me feel all the feels. Are you kidding me? Sometimes when I watch videos of Marlo Fisken, all I can think is “holy shit” over and over and over again. She is a human being like the rest of us . . . except she’s not like the rest of us. She’s Marlo. Stripper Style:To me there’s a difference between what I think of as stripper style and sensual style, so I’ve broken them out here. I don’t know that I can really define the difference, and maybe you won’t see the difference at all. Anyhoo: The heel clacks. The floppy ankles. The ALL of it. Anyone who knows me knows that this stands as one of my favorite pole videos of all time. I mean, come ON. Hard core woman crush. GAME ON.Josiah BadAzz is insanely fun to watch when he’s working the floor stripper style. Don’t get me wrong, he could dance in any old style and be amazing. Sensual Style: Languid, don’t-take-your-eyes-off dancing. Mesmerizing. Oh, and there’s a disco ball doing something, too.Even when all she’s doing is unfurling and curling a long, stilettoed leg, who can help but to watch? Movement like water. Sexy, sexy water. I think I would watch Eva Bembo sit and drink water. Honestly. PS – yes, you probably recognize the two other faces in this vid. 😉 I don’t intend for this to be all-encompassing. There are a lot of amazing pole dancers out there in the world. But the next time you avoid doing floorwork because you think there’s only one way to do it, remember this post and GET DOWN THERE and WERK IT!
